What is the dark web?

matrix-

It refers to a collection of websites that one simply can’t access on traditional search engines. That is, they aren’t indexed by traditional search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. This simply means that you can’t get direct access to the dark web, if you type dark web on a search engine like Google, you’ll get articles and blogs about the dark web, but you won’t be able to access it directly. It’s a bit like the hidden part of the moon or the submerged part of the iceberg. While anyone can access the surface web, the dark web is purposefully hidden and isn’t accessible through standard web search and browsers. The dark web is known as where nefarious acts occur and is a bit like the Internet’s seventh circle of hell.

The use of the dark web

1. Communication

Not this isn’t like your typical what’s app group, nor your discord serve. Your IP address can’t be tracked on the dark web, so many people use it to communicate about their illegal transactions. It can also be used by people who live in fascist states and need a place to voice out their frustration about the government of their countries. Back in 2015, the Chinese government, ban the use of VPNs in the country as it allowed Chinese people to use the Internet, which isn’t allowed in China. There’s even a dark web version of Facebook, which is aptly called BlackBook.

2. Drug sales

The dark web is the prime spot for illegal activity, and as much as we said it was for communication for people living in communist and fascist countries, it is mostly for illicit activities. The one good thing it does, doesn’t absolve it of all the bad it continues to do. Experts of the dark web believe that it might be responsible for 100 to 150 million dollars of drug sales per year. Interestingly, enough the business model of online drug trafficking on the dark web is strangely similar to E-Commerce. You can say anything about them, but you can’t say they aren’t professionals in their jobs. Because every transaction is done anonymously, the payment method that most sellers prefer is either bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.

3. Child pornography

Well, this is the Internet, so are you surprised that there are people out there throwing money at abject and dehumanizing pornographic content? Because of its secrecy, the dark web is the hotspot for any type of illegal adult videos, and according to the FBI, there is a huge market for this out there. It is estimated that there are at least hundreds of thousands if not millions of photos of children out there on the dark web. We may laugh at the prospect of the dark web and say that it is the underbelly of the Internet, but stuff like this makes us realize that it is a haven for genuinely sick and evil individuals.

These are some of the abject things you can find on the dark web. Sound off in the comment section and tell us if you want to see a part 2 on the dark web.
