Smartphone History

The number of smartphone users worldwide today surpasses six billion and is forecast to further grow by several hundred million in the next few years. Very few people know where the first smartphones have emerged, and we will not make you wait any further; the first smartphone was invented in 1992, yes, the year where the cold war was declared over.

In 1992, International Business Machines Corporation invented the first smartphone ever. Yes, I know that you would have thought of smartphones as being a new thing but far from that. Of course, it was as sophisticated as it is right now.

Even if it was invented in 1992, it was released only two years after that. In 1994, the device was on the market for $ 1100, and in six months, they sold more than 50,000 units. Thirty years after the first release, there was the advent of the Internet which brought digital telecommunication.

The First Smartphones – 1992

The first smartphone, developed by IBM, was invented in 1992 and released for sale in 1994. It bore the name Simon Personal Communicator (SPC). The device was not very compact and slim, but still had some elements that became a basic component of all subsequent smartphones. . It had a calendar, an address book, and its own scheduler. It even had a standard keyboard and an on-screen keyboard with pen input!

The Internet – 2000

It wasn’t until 2000 that the smartphone was connected to a true 3G network. In other words, a cellular standard was developed that allowed portable electronic devices to access the Internet wirelessly. This expanded the capabilities of smartphones to include video conferencing and sending large email attachments. However, Internet access through your Phone comes at a price. While the device’s price had dropped to between $300 and $700, the cost of data transfer was not worth it for most.

One of the most influential years for smartphone development was 2007, the year Steve Jobs and the team at Mac world introduced the very first iPhone. Not only was it the most elegant touchscreen device to hit the market, but it was also the first device to offer a full, non-diluted version of the Internet. The very first iPhone allowed consumers to browse the Internet as they would on a desktop computer. The device was offered in 4GB ($499) and 8GB ($599) capacities. It had a battery life of 8 hours of talk time (compared to 1992 smartphones that had only 1 hour of juice) and 250 hours of standby time!

Google announces that it will offer the Android mobile operating system for free. Anyone can use and modify it. By default, it uses Google services for search, email and video.

Apple announced that it sold 4.7 million iPhones in the summer quarter, which is almost 13% of the smartphone market, and research in Motion came in at 15%.

The first Android Phone, the G1, hit the market, and it has a slide-out keyboard and limited touchscreen capabilities.

Microsoft decided to discontinue Windows Mobile because it could not compete with the iPhone and Android and developed Windows Phone – a completely new mobile operating system.
